EC 1 Miss Caitlin McKerchar                                                           Speaking and Listening Program

EC 2 Miss Sarah Welsford

EC 3 Ms Maya Kassem

EC 4 Miss Lauren Ace

To assist parents and families of PrePrimary students, the Department of Education produce a booklet to help parents know what to expect when their children start school.

Morning Tea  Pre Primary children will have their own individual morning tea at recess time each day. Skills of indepenence and the ability to manage your own food are taught by the teachers. Children are encouraged to only bring fruit or vegetables for the morning tea snack. Please place the snack in your child's lunchbox as teachers will help children identify how to select a small snack and save their remaining food for lunch. If you would like assistance please see your child's classroom teacher.

On Entry Assessment Program  During Weeks 3 – 6 of Term 1 your child will be participating in the Department of Education’s state-wide On-entry Assessment Program. The main purpose of the program is to provide teachers with an opportunity, early in the year, to collect information on the essential literacy and numeracy skills and understandings of each child in their class. This will assist your child’s teacher to develop informed and intentional teaching for play-based programs, designed to foster each child’s learning, reflective of individual needs. Information sheets have been made to help parents understand the testing.

Please see the PrePrimary OnEntry Testing Parent Information and the key messages sheet for more information. Additional information can also be found by accessing the On-entry Assessment Program  website.

To assist parents in understanding the results of the On-entry Assessment program at O'Connor Primary, a parent meeting will be arranged and parents will be informed as soon as information becomes available. For more information see your child's classroom teacher.

Speaking and Listening are important skills a child needs to learn before they learn to read. The following program has been put together to help your child develop these very important skills. The books required for this program have been bought for your child’s use by O’Connor Schools' Parent and Citizens Association. This indicates the P & C’s commitment to improving literacy within all students. For more information please see the parent letter.

Education Assistants work with the classroom teachers in the classrooms and playground to ensure positive outcomes for all students in PrePrimary. The Education Assistants go with the children to the specialist classes. The assistants prepare resources, work alongside children and support the teacher where needed. The Education Assistants in Pre Primary are - Mrs Sue Tagliaferri, Mrs Maureen Hartley, Mrs Elizabeth Paterson, Mrs Toni Gregory, Mrs Ngaire Hall, Mrs Noelene Gallo, Ms Fiona Kelly and Ms Rhonda Murphy.

EC 3 Ms Maya Kassem

About the teacher -

Hello! My name is Maya Kassem and I have been fortunate enough to be selected as one of the Pre Primary teachers at O’Connor Primary School. I am thrilled to work in a school that prides itself in the development of the whole child. I am a second year teacher that has recently relocated to the town of Kalgoorlie.

The learning environment in EC3 will be one that is secure, motivating and fun, so that the children are encouraged to reach their full potential. This will be achieved, both indoor and outdoor, through a combination of spontaneous play and intentional teaching. I have developed a holistic approach designed to satisfy the child in a social, emotional, physical, spiritual, lingual and intellectual sense. It is essential that the children are valued, nurtured and respected as individuals. It is my role as an educator to assume responsibility for each child’s personal and educational development whilst they are in my care.

The well being of all children is essential, irrespective of personal circumstances. This in mind,  regular communication with families is an integral aspect of my role so that we can work alongside each other for the benefit of the child. I look forward to and EXCITING and FUN 2019 year at O’ Connor Primary.

Meetings with the teacher can be scheduled by phoning or emailing the school.
